For this project there we had one designer per mission and each mission would be broken into several discrete levels. We would receive
a design treatment of the mission from EA and then it was up to the designers at Gearbox to create the missions. These treatments
were of varying quality and the one provided for this mission was sparse and incomplete. At the start of work on this mission I created
a new design write-up which was sent back to EA and quickly approved. The final levels were very close to the concept I had created,
which was satisfying. By today’s standards the level geometry is a bit on the blocky side; however, I had a goal to avoid the “hallways
and corridors” feel for this mission and feel that was accomplished.
The Island Getway mission has Bond landing on a lush tropical island that the bad guys have setup as a missle launch site; you must disable
the launch and generally cause as much havok to villian as possible.
A version of Nightfire was released on consoles (PS2, XBox, and GameCube) those versions were developed in parallel by another company,
Eurocom, and only shared a high level design with Gearbox's version.
Maps can be loaded directly from the developer console of the PC version. Under the properties setting of the game shortcut add:
+console 1. The console can be toggled in-game by pressing the ~ (tilde) key.
